PBS fans might already be familiar with Dr. Amen, renowned brain expert and best-selling author. He’s actually a neuropsychiatrist, and I’m a big fan of his work, having watched several of his shows on PBS, seen him on Dr. Oz and other programs. I recently received a review copy of his most recent book, Unleash The Power Of The Female Brain and have been devouring it over the past week or so.

I’ll admit that when I first heard about this book, I was a bit skeptical. I mean most of us women already tend to believe that we are smarter than men, but is there really a difference between men’s and women’s brains? Why do women need a special book about it???

By comparing the scans of male and female brains using a technique called SPECT, Dr. Amen and his team were able to identify and understand some of the special strengths and vulnerabilities of the female brain. This book explains the unique features of a woman’s brain and details the ways we can help ourselves be happier and healthier by caring for our brain more than we care for any other body part.

It turns out, the strengths of a woman’s brain include Intuition, Empathy, and Self-Control. The downside is that women’s brains also make us more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, anxiety and eating disorders.

The book gives specific tips and suggestions for how to unleash the power of the female brain. This includes important info about how to feed our brains for a healthier body AND mind, how to stop the negative chatter we all seem to have running wild in our heads using what he calls ANT Therapy (Automatic Negative Thoughts), and exercises on embracing failures, identify energy robbers and so much more. There’s also advice about which natural supplements Dr. Amen recommends for PMS, Stress, Restful Sleep and a whole host of other challenges many women face at one time or another.

One thing I really liked about it was the use of scan-able QR codes placed throughout different sections so I could use my smartphone to link to (and bookmark) more information and resources. For example, the chapter about Feeding the Female Brain includes an invitation for the reader to “View a list of eco-friendly fish” as well as “View a list of foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids” and other related lists I’ll be happy to have on my phone each time I hit the grocery store or plan my meals and shopping list.

This book offers readers a 12-hour plan for “supercharging your brain’s health, power and vitality. I’m finding it to be more of a handbook that I can refer to over and over again. However you choose to use it, I definitely recommend you pick up a copy of Unleash The Power Of The Female Brain for yourself, your mom or any other woman in your life!
