For a short-haired dog, Daisy sure does shed a LOT. This means fur on the sofa, in our bed where she sleeps every night, in the car…you name it, we find hair there. So I was super excited to test out the Shed Defender. It’s basically a dog bodysuit that contains pet hair. It also has some other useful features I think dog moms and dads will appreciate.
What is Shed Defender
The Shed Defender is a full-body dog onesie made from a lightweight, breathable fabric, with four-way stretch to allow your dog to move freely. It’s machine washable and dryable. The main purpose is to contain pet hair and prevent your dog from leaving fur everywhere. It can also help reduce anxiety, since its snug fit can create a calming effect (similar to a Thunder Shirt). If you and your dog like to spend time outdoors, you’ll be glad to know that the Shed Defender provides UV protection and helps keep your dog clean. It can be used instead of the dreaded Cone of Shame for certain medical conditions. It even comes with its own little pouch for travel and storage.
Putting It On and Taking It Off
The first time we tried putting the bodysuit on Daisy, it was a bit of a challenge. She doesn’t like new things and was really skeptical about the whole situation. To end up with a positive experience. never force your dog to do something they really don’t want to do. To get her used to it, I just put it on half way at first and then gave her some treats while we hung out.
Once we got the whole thing on and zipped up, it took her about 30 minutes to really be ok with it, and then I think she forgot she had it on. If you are planning to use one when you travel, in the car, or for anxiety reduction, I suggest a few trial-runs at home to get your dog familiar with what to expect.
Size and Fit
As you can see, it fits Daisy pretty well. Although there are MANY sizes available, I was concerned when choosing her size online because usually NOTHING fits her right. T-shirts, Halloween costumes, harnesses, we always seem to have trouble because she’s very slim but has a broad chest. Thanks to the accurate size chart and stretchy fabric, we didn’t have a problem. She’s 48lbs and is wearing the Large.
The model we got is the Original, with a full zipper, but Shed Defender also makes a Sport edition where the zipper stops at the belly, allowing easier access for potty.
