Spot & Tango Review + Coupon: Fresh Dog Food Delivery Service

Dog lovers, we’ve heard from many of you who are interested in feeding your dog real, fresh cooked food but aren’t sure where to start. It can be a challenge to know the right recipes and ingredients to use, to make sure your dog gets the proper nutrients. Plus there is the hassle of extra grocery shopping, measuring, cooking and packaging of all those meals. Like you, I want the best for our dog Daisy, but without all the guesswork and extra time in the kitchen.

We’ve recently been introduced to Spot & Tango, a meal delivery service for dogs. It’s fresh pet food made with locally sourced ingredients, cooked to order in their USDA certified kitchen just days before arriving at your door. We accepted Spot & Tango’s invitation to try out their dog food delivery service and are excited to tell you all about it.

Dog Food Review Spot and Tango

This Spot & Tango dog food review shows the quantity and recipes we received based on Daisy’s personalized dog food meal plan. Your dog will get their own personalized meal plan based on the info you give when you sign up for your trial subscription on spotandtango.com. All of the recipes are human-grade, fresh, ready-to-serve meals made with fresh fruits & vegetables. No artificial additives, preservatives or fillers.

After taking the quiz and receiving your personalized meal plan, your dog’s meals are delivered directly to your door. They arrive packed in dry ice, and even in South Florida, ours were all still frozen after the box sat out in the sun on our porch til we got home the day it arrived.

You just open the box, defrost a few days worth and serve. Keep the rest in your freezer for later. At first I was concerned about the amount of freezer space Daisy’s dog food would take up, but 2 weeks worth fits easily on the small top shelf of our freezer, next to where the ice maker is.

It’s important when switching your dog’s food that you do so gradually. Our first shipment included full instructions on how to transition our old dog food to the new one.

In addition to the helpful feeding instructions, I love the info about recycling. There is very little excess packaging, and the green insulation foam is actually biodegradable and dissolves in the sink with running water. I’m sad I forgot to get video of it dissolving but I was really enjoying watching it melt away, and I forgot!

Back to the feeding schedule and transitioning. Out of extra caution, we took things even more slowly than instructed. I started with a spoonful a day for the first few days and then went on to use the fresh food as topper on Daisy’s kibble. They actually have a subscription you can choose if you only want to use the fresh dog food as topper and don’t plan to fully transition from dry kibble. Some dogs like the crunch of dry food and people have different preferences for the mix of food they like to feed their pups. Spot & Tango make it easy to strike the right balance, whatever you decide to do.

They include a bag clip to keep leftovers fresh. I love the little attentions to detail like this one!

As you can see, this meal is Lamb and Brown Rice dog food. There’s spinach, whole peas, chopped carrot pieces, parsley, apple cider vinegar, and fresh blueberries accompanying the ground lamb and brown rice. The personalized info sheet we received with our shipment includes the full list of ingredients for each of the three dog food meal varieties we received. Recipe details also include an AAFCO Statement about the nutrient profile for each variety of dog food in your plan.

The other two varieties we received were Turkey & Red Quinoa and Beef & Millet. Your dog’s plan will be personalized for their needs, age and size. You can check out Spot & Tango’s Dog Breed Knowledge Base to learn more about personalized dog food for breed-specific, young, old, sensitive stomach, overweight dogs, etc.

Hopefully you can see how frosty cold everything was when I opened our box for the first time!

Daisy is really excited about getting her own special box of freshly cooked dog food, and I love the convenience. The personalized recommendations and quality, real food ingredients are also important to me.

Daisy Tries Shed Defender, The Dog Onesie That Controls Shedding

For a short-haired dog, Daisy sure does shed a LOT. This means fur on the sofa, in our bed where she sleeps every night, in the car…you name it, we find hair there. So I was super excited to test out the Shed Defender. It’s basically a dog bodysuit that contains pet hair. It also has some other useful features I think dog moms and dads will appreciate.

What is Shed Defender

The Shed Defender is a full-body dog onesie made from a lightweight, breathable fabric, with four-way stretch to allow your dog to move freely. It’s machine washable and dryable. The main purpose is to contain pet hair and prevent your dog from leaving fur everywhere. It can also help reduce anxiety, since its snug fit can create a calming effect (similar to a Thunder Shirt). If you and your dog like to spend time outdoors, you’ll be glad to know that the Shed Defender provides UV protection and helps keep your dog clean. It can be used instead of the dreaded Cone of Shame for certain medical conditions. It even comes with its own little pouch for travel and storage.

Putting It On and Taking It Off

The first time we tried putting the bodysuit on Daisy, it was a bit of a challenge. She doesn’t like new things and was really skeptical about the whole situation. To end up with a positive experience. never force your dog to do something they really don’t want to do. To get her used to it, I just put it on half way at first and then gave her some treats while we hung out.

Once we got the whole thing on and zipped up, it took her about 30 minutes to really be ok with it, and then I think she forgot she had it on. If you are planning to use one when you travel, in the car, or for anxiety reduction, I suggest a few trial-runs at home to get your dog familiar with what to expect.

Size and Fit

As you can see, it fits Daisy pretty well. Although there are MANY sizes available, I was concerned when choosing her size online because usually NOTHING fits her right. T-shirts, Halloween costumes, harnesses, we always seem to have trouble because she’s very slim but has a broad chest. Thanks to the accurate size chart and stretchy fabric, we didn’t have a problem. She’s 48lbs and is wearing the Large.

The model we got is the Original, with a full zipper, but Shed Defender also makes a Sport edition where the zipper stops at the belly, allowing easier access for potty.

BarkBox Review + Coupon Prom Edition 2018

Some posts may contain affiliate links. Read the full disclosure.

We were a little behind schedule in letting Daisy open her June BarkBox but it was worth the wait. The theme was Squeakhearts Under the Stars and it was truly prom-tastic, complete with prom-posal, corsage, and more fun surprises!

In case you aren’t already familiar with BarkBox, it’s the most popular monthly subscription box for dogs and each box is customized for your dog’s size and food allergies.

We hope you’ll stay for our BarkBox review but if you are just here for the BarkBox coupon, code WOOFWOOFMAMA will get you a FREE extra month added to any order of 1-month or more at BarkBox.com/woofwoofmama.

Daisy gets the large dog box which is shown here, but whatever size your dog is, they will get the same number of toys and treats…usually 2 fun dog toys, 3 full-size bags of treats and 1 tasty chew. Often there are additional surprises and goodies thrown to go along with the monthly theme.

Note that this is the Classic BarkBox edition which usually includes plush toys. If your dog is a real toy destroyer then check out the BarkBox Super Chewer edition instead.

BarkBox subscription prices start at $21/month and shipping is free for US. Most toys are Bark exclusives and all treats are made in the US or Canada (we’ve seen some lamb treats from New Zealand and we’re ok with that!)

Here’s a look at what was in the June 2018 Classic BarkBox along with the retail values of each item if purchased separately:

June BarkBox Dog Treats

Baaallroom Dance Dog Treats ($8 retail value) These lamb and duck dog treats are great for dogs with a sensitive tummy (like Daisy) and are super tasty (according to Daisy). No wheat, corn or soy. Fun short sticks make them the right size for stuffing in puzzle toys.

Fish Platter Dog Treats ($8 retail value) Made with salmon and whitefish; soft and chewy. I like how tiny these dog treats are which makes them perfect as pocket treats while training or out for walks. This full-size bag will last a LONG time since we can dole them out in such small portions!

Deluxe Lamb Chew Stick for Dogs ($4 retail value) Etta Says! is one of our favorite brands for meat chews and this crunchy stick doesn’t disappoint. 7″ of tasty lamb.

June BarkBox Dog Toys

Andrew the Hopeful Nerd Dog Toy ($14 retail value) Adorable prom-posal and super fun 17″ dog toy. BarkBox has started labeling most of their dog toys with info on the features (hidden spikey ball toy inside, rope material, etc.)

Click n’Rip Camera Dog Toy ($16 retail value) It’s been a while since I’ve seen a disposable camera but this one has an extra special surprise BONUS TOY hidden inside!

The info card that came in this month’s BarkBox had perforated tear-out prom accessories: a bow tie and a rose corsage. Just what every dog needs for those perfect prom pics!

BarkBox Cost and Value

By our calculation, this month’s BarkBox had $50 worth of dog toys and  treats if you were to purchase them all separately.

That’s an amazing value when you consider that subscription prices start at $21/month with free US shipping.

In addition to saving money, we also love the WOW-factor and excitement of getting a new delivery of surprises each month. It’s a chance to discover new dog treats and toys that we might not have known about otherwise. And the BarkBox toys are really Instagram-worthy, making them the perfect photo props in addition to some amazing dog toys.
