My Dog: The Paradox. A Lovable Discourse from The Oatmeal

Daisy & I managed to get our paws on an early review copy of My Dog: The Paradox: A Lovable Discourse about Man’s Best Friend, the new book by Matthew Inman (The Oatmeal), but the rest of you won’t have to wait long since it’s being released next week! It’s a little book, but one of those really special ones that you’ll find yourself thinking about at random times, and that you’ll pick up to flip through frequently.

The Oatmeal book, My Dog: The Paradox

How one little book can manage to be both so hilarious AND heart-breaking I don’t know, but it does. In a few short pages, it captures and coveys everything that is true and funny and silly and sad about having a dog in your life. And just like a dog, it will make you cry some, but it will make you laugh a whole lot more.

If you’re familiar with The Oatmeal then you’ve probably already seen the online comic version of My Dog: The Paradox and might be wondering why you’d bother to get the book.

First of all, it’s been redrawn in full-color (the online version is black & white).  Also, there’s nothing like holding a real copy of a book in your hands and flipping through the pages. I’m a fan of the library and Kindle too, but trust me, this is one of those books you’ll be happy you own. And at around ten bucks it’s a deal.

If you’re still looking for a reason, supporting The Oatmeal by buying his book is a nice way to say Thanks if his free online works have ever: cured your Monday blues; provided much needed workday distraction; or just made you appear cooler and funnier than you really are when you shared them with friends on Facebook.

As of now, there are no reviews posted on Amazon or anywhere else that I can find, so you’ll just have to take my word for it and buy a copy here! Release date is May 7, but it’s available for pre-order now at $8.99 ($9.99 list).

I’ve already seen My Dog: The Paradox online and can tell you it will make you laugh AND cry (seriously). Here’s a funny except to give you an idea of what you can look forward to:

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday: Spay and Neuter Your Pets

World spay day

Image Source:  World Spay Day 2013

Wednesday is usually the day when I feature some cute photos of Daisy, but since she’s a rescue dog and knows all about the problem of shelter overcrowding and pet homelessness, I knew she wouldn’t mind if I share these photos with you instead!

February is National Spay and Neuter Month, yesterday was World Spay Day, and many are recognizing today as National Spay Day, but every day is a good day to remind everyone the importance of spaying and neutering your pets! Nationwide, an estimated 6-8 million homeless kittens, puppies, cats, and dogs enter animal shelters every year. About half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the other half are put down.  Help end pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering your pets.

Wordless Wednesday: Daisy’s Got Mail!

Daisy dog opening her doggyloot mail

Does your dog love getting mail as much as Daisy does? I swear she knows which packages are for her, like this one we got from the doggyloot Toy of the Month Club yesterday! I won’t show you what’s in it since I don’t want to ruin the surprise for anyone else who hasn’t gotten theirs yet, but she sure had fun opening her mail! And yes, I know I need to trim her nails!

The Harlem Shake Goes To The Dogs…And To SeaWorld, Too!

pets harlem shake

You may or may not already be familiar with (or sick of) the Harlem Shake meme that’s been going around on YouTube recently. I think it’s pretty funny even if it’s already on its way out as many pop culture experts are predicting…

If you need to catch up, Wikipedia describes the concept:

“The videos last 30-something seconds and feature an excerpt from the song “Harlem Shake” by electronic musician Baauer. Usually, a video begins with one person (often helmeted or masked) dancing to the song alone for 15 seconds, surrounded by other people not paying attention or unaware of the dancing individual. When the bass drops, the video switches to the entire crowd doing a crazy convulsive dance for the next 15 seconds. The dancing style should not be confused with the original Harlem Shake dance. Moreover, in the second half of the video, people often wear crazy outfits or costumes while wielding strange props.”

It’s not just humans that have gotten in on the act…here are some of my favorite Harlem Shake Videos featuring hilarious and cute animals:

Harlem Shake: Animal Office Edition from The Pet Collective

Harlem Shake (Puppy Edition)

SeaWorld Harlem Shake: Sea Lions and Walrus!

Harlem Shake Rambo The Cat Edition

I’m having a hard time choose a favorite…leave us a comment and let us know which ones made you laugh!
