Do you have a child or grandchild who wants to be a veterinarian? If so, you’ll want to make sure they know about Vet Set Go. It’s the first and only online community dedicated to helping aspiring veterinarians explore their passion. It’s free to join, and your tween or teen will get access to all kinds of resources, including videos, games, articles and more. I’ve spent the last week or so exploring the site and am SO impressed with everything. Here are some of the highlights from my tour:

Vet Learning Games

Super fun and interactive learning games to help future veterinarians explore everything from dog breeds to animal anatomy. Don’t let the cute illustrations fool you…these games are challenging! I scored 7 out of 10 on my first anatomy quiz and learned quite a bit. And I’ve become somewhat obsessed with the blood works game…super cool sound effects, too!

The Meet the Vet video series features all sorts of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of different types of veterinarians and the work they do. This is a great way for interested kiddos to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a Zoo Veterinarian, a Shelter Vet, a Veterinary Oncologist, Sea Turtle Specialist and more. Who knew there were so many interesting and exciting career options for animal lovers!?!

Vet Camp for Kids

One of my favorite features of Vet Set Go is their large database of activities including Vet Camps, Zoo Camps, Hospital and Vet Office Tours, Volunteer opportunities and more. You can search by type of activity and location. I was pleased to learn about several opportunities in our area including Zoo Miami’s Conservation Teen Scientist program for high school students seeking to learn more about environmental conservation, wildlife biology, zoo operations, and public engagement.

Vet Set Go Book

The Moms Choice Award winning Vet Set Go! Book is written for 9-14 year olds interested in becoming a veterinarian. Includes tips and advice on how get animal experience, volunteer, learn animal science, meet veterinarians, and connect with other aspiring veterinarians. Full of color photographs and graphics on every page offering checklists, case studies and action plans to help your kid turn their dream of becoming a vet into a reality.

The Incredible Dr. Pol National Geographic Wild

In honor of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (November 5th-11th), star of National Geographic Wild’s #1 series,  Dr. Jan Pol from The Incredible Dr. Pol took time from his busy schedule to offer our readers his expertise on spaying and neutering, as well as answer some burning questions we had about him, his family and the show. We’re HUGE fans of the show and so excited to get the opportunity to interview him as well as help spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering all pets to help reduce the number of unwanted animals who end up in shelters through no fault of their own.

10 Questions with The Incredible Dr. Pol

1) We know that you’re helping to spread the word about reducing the homeless pet population as part of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.  What age should pets be spayed or neutered?  Is it ever too early?
We spay and neuter pets at 4 months.  This is the ideal age for us.  I know some places do it earlier, but I like to do it at 16 weeks.

2) Are there other benefits to spaying and neutering pets besides reducing the homeless animal population/overcrowding in shelters?
Yes.  It reduces the incidence of mammary tumors, uterus infections and in males the prostrate problems later in life. [Read more…]

Canine Influenza: Dogs Can Get the Flu, Too!

Dog Flu

Did you know that dogs can get the flu, too??? Canine influenza can be a serious threat to dogs, but its signs may be easily confused with another respiratory disease called Bordetella (canine cough).  Just like Bordetella, dogs that spend time at boarding facilities, doggy daycare, groomers, dog parks, and group training are at higher risk.

The most common sign of dog flu is a soft, wet cough that may last for 3 to 4 weeks. Other signs include fever, runny nose, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Like human flu, dog flu can lead to more serious conditions like pneumonia. Up to 8% of dogs that get the flu can die from the infection. About 20% of infected dogs will show no signs of disease but can still spread CIV to other dogs.
To help protect your dog against the dog flu, speak to your veterinarian to find out if vaccination is recommended. For more information on Canine Influenza check out MyPet.com.

This post was written on behalf of DogTime Blog Champion Program for awareness purposes and is not medical advice. For medical advice and recommendations you should speak directly with your veterinarian. Only they can say which vaccinations or other medical treatments are appropriate for your pet.
