There is so much going on in the world right now, that I thought it was time for some dog news. Here’s a roundup of the top news for dog lovers from the past week.

I think we’ve all been guilty of stress eating at one time or another. In campaign news, Elizabeth Warren’s dog Bailey stole a burrito because ‘running for first dog’ was stressful. Bailey has been a star on Warren’s social media accounts and frequently joined her on the campaign trail. Everyone on Twitter is clearly #TeamBailey!

In sadder news, Marnie, the Shih Tzu who charmed Instagram with her head tilt and lolling tongue, died this week at age 18. Marnie was an internet sensation, and poster dog for senior dog adoption. She passed peacefully and will be missed.

There’s lots of news, rumors and confusing information about the Coronavirus, including how COVID-19 may affect pets. Here’s some of what you need to know, but always check with your vet for specific pet health concerns. Pet cats and dogs cannot pass the Coronavirus to humans, but they can test positive for low levels of the pathogen if they catch it from their owner.

Experts have advised that everyone make reasonable (but not panicky) preparations as the coronavirus spreads. That means making sure you are stocked up on pet food and meds so that you don’t run out if you get sick and have to self-quarantine, or there is a shortage in the supply chain. You should also always have a backup plan for who will care for your pets in an illness or emergency.

If you do get sick, limit contact with your pets . Avoid snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must interact with your pet, wash your hands before and after. Hand washing is ALWAYS good advice!

On a lighter note, we thought this sweet dog news was a great way to end our roundup for the week, Titos Vodka for Dog People and The Dinner Party Project hosted a hilarious and adorable Dog Dinner Pawty to help promote pet adoption. Go HERE to check out all the photos. They sure made us smile!

And speaking of smiles, a two-legged pup named Lieutenant Dan is a finalist in the Cadbury Bunny tryouts. Lieutenant Dan, named after the “Forrest Gump” character who lost his legs in Vietnam, is one of 10 finalists competing for a national commercial spot for Cadbury. Thousands of household pets from across the nation applied, but only a few were chosen. Not only will the winner star in a new Cadbury Clucking Bunny commercial, but they will also receive a $5,000 cash prize. Good Luck and click here to give Lieutenant Dan your vote.

The Incredible Dr. Pol National Geographic Wild

In honor of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (November 5th-11th), star of National Geographic Wild’s #1 series,  Dr. Jan Pol from The Incredible Dr. Pol took time from his busy schedule to offer our readers his expertise on spaying and neutering, as well as answer some burning questions we had about him, his family and the show. We’re HUGE fans of the show and so excited to get the opportunity to interview him as well as help spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering all pets to help reduce the number of unwanted animals who end up in shelters through no fault of their own.

10 Questions with The Incredible Dr. Pol

1) We know that you’re helping to spread the word about reducing the homeless pet population as part of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.  What age should pets be spayed or neutered?  Is it ever too early?
We spay and neuter pets at 4 months.  This is the ideal age for us.  I know some places do it earlier, but I like to do it at 16 weeks.

2) Are there other benefits to spaying and neutering pets besides reducing the homeless animal population/overcrowding in shelters?
Yes.  It reduces the incidence of mammary tumors, uterus infections and in males the prostrate problems later in life. [Read more…]
