Wouldn’t it be great if you could teach your dog to bring you the newspaper, get you a tissue when you sneeze, and even help sort the laundry? These are just a few of the fun and amazing tricks you and your dog can learn from the new book The Best Dog Tricks on the Planet: 106 Amazing Things Your Dog Can Do on Command by celebrity dog trainer Babette Haggerty.

Starting with basic Building Blocks, and then moving on to more advanced and original tricks, the book includes detailed photos and step-by-step instructions to teach you how to teach your dog to do some really amazing stuff including:

  • Bring Me the Ringing Phone
  • Wipe Your Feet
  • Turn the Lights On and Off
  • Open the Door
  • Balance an Egg on Your Nose
  • Strum a Guitar

Daisy and I have skipped ahead to Chapter 4 Circus Tricks and are going to surprise Woof Woof Papa with the Army Crawl trick for Christmas morning if we can learn it in time. Since he’s an Army veteran, I thought that would be so cute! (Hopefully he doesn’t decide that NOW is a good time to start catching up on reading my recent blog posts! LOL)

As the author points out, training your dog to do tricks isn’t just for the entertainment value or even just so that you can have a well-behaved dog. More importantly, it also creates a strong bond between you and helps your dog learn boundaries, makes them happier, more confident and relaxed. Don’t we ALL want that for our fur kids?

This book makes a great gift idea for any dog lover on your list, so you might want to snag a few extra copies to have on hand in addition to one for yourself. The book is so entertaining and easy to follow that it’s perfect for anyone from your Tweens to Grandma & Grandpa! It would also make a thoughtful Thank You gift for your dog’s favorite groomer, pet sitter, or other important pet person in their life.

You can get it at Amazon in both Kindle and Paperback formats. I love the printed version for the coffee table, since it’s fun for people to flip through and try out when they visit, but I’m also thinking of downloading the Kindle version so that I can have the detailed training tips with me on my phone when Daisy & I are out at the park, too!

Watch Your Pets When You’re Not Home w/ Samsung PetCam

samsung petcam
As pet parents, we all hate having to leave our fur kids home when we go to work or other places where pets aren’t allowed. If you’ve ever worried or wondered what they are up to when you’re away, “there’s an app for that!” Actually it’s a WiFi enabled video camera from Samsung and it lets you remotely monitor your pet using free apps for Smartphone, Tablet, PC or Mac.

Since receiving the Samsung PetCam WiFi Video Pet Monitor for review, we’ve tested it out in several situations and I’m super impressed with how well it works. I’ll tell you right up front that I think this fun & useful little system makes a great gift for yourself or any pet parent on your list. While it retails for $199, you’ll find it on sale this time of year and can snag one for as low as $79 here. Amazon prices change frequently so be sure to hurry if you want a deal!

The Samsung Wi-Fi PetCam offers real-time video and audio monitoring, making it the perfect solution for anyone who is away from their home, but still wants to keep an eye on their pets. It allows for easy set up and placement anywhere in the house, video feeds are accessible through a website or smartphone app on iOS or Android and owners can even set it up to receive notifications from sound/motion that is detected in the area. With a one touch pairing button, monitoring a pet is super easy and FUN!

I found it really easy to add the camera to our home WiFi network and got it installed, set up and working in about 15 minutes. I found it a little confusing at first to get the settings right so that it would upload video clips that I could watch later, but figured out I had to first link my YouTube profile to my Google+ profile and set my Uploads to Private. Currently, the PetCam can only record and watch 30 second video clips of “events” via YouTube. I would prefer to be able to have them sent to my smartphone or private cloud storage like DropBox or iCloud but once you get the privacy settings sorted, you can log in to YouTube and see the little lock icon next to each new video and rest assured that no one else is viewing what goes on at your place unless you choose to share it with them! It can also save snapshots to your Picasa account if you want, too.

The video is great on both WiFi and wireless and I’ve used both my Samsung Galaxy S3 Android phone and my iPad to watch Daisy remotely when I’m away. Since I work from home, she’s really gotten used to having me around almost all the time, so she does have a bit of separation anxiety when left alone. I’ve always worried about this but am happy to have seen, thanks to the PetCam, that after giving several really big hound dog howls and pacing for a few minutes, she does calmly settle herself up on the arm of hubby’s chair and take a nap.

The camera doesn’t have the option to record continuously or for longer than 30 second bits, so you get little snippets of what happens, but they’re time-stamped so you can watch them in order. I spliced together two of the 30 second recordings so you could check it out:

As you can see, the camera doesn’t move, so your pet may sometimes walk out of view. If you have a big place or want several angles, the system is expandable up to 10 cameras which is great if you have multiple pets or let your fur kids have full run of the place. Our apartment isn’t that big so we just leave her in the living room and shut the other doors when we go out.

In addition to really good quality video during daylight hours, the camera also has Night Vision capabilities up to 20 feet so that you can keep an eye on your pets even in the dark. And another cool feature is that it has Two-Way Talk so that you can hear what’s going on and talk back to them. Super handy if your pet is naughty or gets lonely and you just want to say Hi. This function only works over WiFi and not when you are on 3G or 4G wireless connections.

All in all, I’m happy to recommend the Samsung PetCam and think it’s a really fun and useful tech gadget for pet parents and anyone else who wants to monitor their home or business while they are away.  Visit Amazon here for deals on one.

I’m participating in this Holiday Tech Gift Idea project on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Soundfreaq. I received a Soundfreaq Sound Spot to facilitate my review.

I’m always a bit skeptical of cute little gadgets and whether they can really deliver the goods, but when I heard Daisy & I were going to be reviewing the new Sound Spot Speaker from Soundfreaq, I could hardly WAIT for it to arrive. I already knew about the impressive quality of their products from a previous review we did and this new little beauty did NOT disappoint!

It’s the Sound Spot Bluetooth Speaker from Soundfreaq. At $70, this little wireless speak packs a big punch when it comes to both sound AND style. It’s available in a variety of fun color options so you’re sure to find one to please even the pickiest person on your holiday gift list.

Great for everyone from your tweens and teens, to Mom or Dad. It’s super easy to use straight out of the box, and super portable, which I love since I listen to music everywhere! So far, I’ve paired it with my Samsung Galaxy S3 Android phone, my iPad, and my Windows 8 laptop. It works well with Pandora, iTunes, Spotify and every other music app you can think of, and I’m still amazed at the sound quality and volume level coming from this little cutie! Because it’s so portable, I put it in the bathroom while I’m doing my makeup and getting ready to go out…and then move it back to the living room, bedroom or my desk or wherever I want to use it next time.

Sound Spot is ready to bring anywhere you want, with its small size and built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. It delivers up to 7 hours of listening when fully charged, and also includes a USB power port so you can charge your phone or other device, even while Sound Spot is running on battery power. This baby is simple to charge – just plug it directly into your computer or any powered USB port for quick and easy charging. I also like to use the wall charger that came with my phone and just plug it straight into a wall outlet.

I really love how well the Wood-White finish goes with our laid-back decor, but it also comes in several other modern color options that would be extremely CUTE in a teen’s room or college dorm. And you can get it in Black, which would be great for an office or Dad’s workshop…you can never go wrong with Black since it goes with everything!

Dahna Bender Christmas Music CD

Here’s a great gift idea that supports a fantastic animal cause! It’s a Christmas Music CD from Dahna Bender. This talented artist is using her beautiful voice to support National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR). Profits from her Christmas Giving of the Heart album go to support the work and mission of NMDR to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home discarded puppy mill dogs and to educate the general public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry.

I’ve been getting in the holiday spirit listening to the Christmas classics on this CD, including Silent Night, Winter Wonderland and lots more long-time favorites plus a few that were new to me.  Here’s the back cover from the album jacket so you can view the full list of songs:
