Ever wish you could talk to your dog? I talk to Daisy all the time, but must confess that I don’t always know what SHE is trying to tell me! Now we can all learn to decode dog language, thanks to How To Speak Dog, A Guide To Decoding Dog Language, a new book about pet behavior from National Geographic. It’s being released today, and we were super excited to receive an early copy and have been thoroughly enjoying the photos, along with great info and helpful tips from authors Aline Alexander Newman & Gary Weitzman, D.V.M.

Although the book is categorized as a kid’s book, I strongly recommend it for every pet parent and all members of the family. Whether you’re a first-timer or have years of experience caring for dogs, you are guaranteed to learn something new that will help you understand dog behavior and the signals dogs send through body language, poses and facial expressions. It’s also set up in a way that is perfect for reading aloud and discussing together in a fun and entertaining way.

For example, one section in the book is titled ‘Telling Tales’.  It details what different tail positions and movements mean. Each section of the book covers a topic using great photos, entertaining text, fun facts, Vet Tips from Dr. Gary and then each topic end with ‘What Is This Dog Saying?’ where you’re presented with a Doggie Dilemma scenario to translate and address, then a sidebar of Training Tips. Topics include Body Talk, Read My Face, Hound Sounds, and several more.

How to Speak Dog: A Guide to Decoding Dog Language is available now in paperback ($12.95 list price). It’s currently on sale at Amazon and you can go here to view the current price and check out some sample pages. You may want to pick up a few extra copies, as it makes an excellent holiday gift idea or Thank You present for a special pet sitter, dog walker or other VIP (very important pet person) in your dog’s life!

$19 per month cell phone

Have you heard the recent buzz about a super new way to save on your smartphone bill? It's a $19 per month rate plan from Republic Wireless with unlimited data, talk and text per line. That can cut the cost of smartphone ownership from over $100 per month (what most people pay now) down to about 60 cents a day!

As if that's not enough, you also get the Motorola Defy XT Smartphone with the offer:

  • Android operating system
  • 3.7-inch Corning® Gorilla® Glass display
  • Front-facing VGA webcam, plus 5MP rear-facing camera with auto-focus, LED flash, and 4x digital zoom
  • Wi-Fi and Sprint 3G coverage with dual-band reception
  • Over 450,000 Android Apps available thru Google Play
  • Dust-proof, water and scratch resistant

Great phone, right??? How are they able to offer all this for so little? Republic Wireless uses something called Hybrid Calling which harnesses the power of WiFi while still giving you access to regular Sprint 3G cellular capabilities when you need it. It's super cool and there are no contracts, no overages and no limits. This video explains even more:

Not only is this a great way to save on your phone cost, but it's also perfect as an inexpensive starter phone for the kiddos, grandparents, or anyone just looking to enter the smartphone world without a big commitment or expense. You know Daisy & I are ALL about saving $$$ and we think this looks like something to consider!

What’s In Daisy’s Bowl? Natural Balance ALPHA Grain-Free Dog Food!

Daisy with Natural Balance

Regular readers probably already know about Daisy’s favorite food and how happy we are with feeding her Natural Balance, but I sometimes receive questions from new followers, our friends and even family asking about what dog food Daisy eats, and how we decided on a brand and formula.

Over the first year and a half after adopting Daisy, we struggled with getting her healthy. She was a scrawny, sick little puppy who didn’t like to eat and had trouble when she did. In addition to the tummy troubles, she also had terrible skin rashes that constantly got infected, and after seeing our first few vet bills, we began to suspect that all this was why she was abandoned at the shelter in the first place!

The veterinarian suggested that before we start running more invasive and expensive tests, or put her on prescription food, that we try experimenting with a few premium wheat-free brands to see if we could find one that suited her. We tried a few, allowing enough time for her system to adjust and even though her tummy troubles  diminished, we didn’t really see an improvement in her appetite or skin until trying Natural Balance’s ALPHA. It’s a grain-free formula and comes in 3 varieties: Chicken, Turkey Meal & Duck; Lamb, Chicken Meal & Rabbit; and Trout, Salmon Meal & Whitefish.

Daisy eats the Trout variety and has been since March of 2012 when we first discovered Natural Balance. You can read the original post about how Daisy started eating Natural Balance for more info. Since that time, Daisy’s appetite and weight have become much more healthy and we’ve seen great improvements in her skin allergies as well.

Besides finding the right combination of ingredients for her sensitive system, she really loves the taste. And that’s super important when you have a dog who struggles with lack of appetite! We used to have to take Daisy in for monthly weight-checks just to make sure she wasn’t wasting away (seriously)…now we measure her meal  portions and limit her treats so she doesn’t overdo it with her enthusiasm!

Who Let The Dogs Out? Plexidor Dog Doors! #PetDoorStyle

dog door

Daisy’s pals over at Libby’s place are some LUCKY PUPS! They recently got a new doggy door installed from Plexidor Performance Pet Doors and we have to admit we are more than a little bit envious. We rent right now on an upper floor so poor Daisy has to let me know when she wants to go out, or wait for us to get home to take her. Luckily I work from home, but it still would be SO nice to have a flexible option for days when things get crazy.

Although dogs should never be left unattended for long periods of time outdoors, a self-service option would be dreamy for anyone with a secure yard and it’s at the top of our list of must-haves just as soon as we move!

Not only does Libby do a great job of explaining the installation process and describing all the features of the door (great security is just one), but she also has some fantastic tips on teaching first-timer fur kids on how to use it! You can read all about it AND watch a slideshow she’s created by visiting her Plexidor product review over at Libby’s Library.

We also think you’ll love watching the dog door in action in this super cute video from Frankie I am a Lover Not a Fighter!

I am blogging on behalf of BlogPaws Pet Blogger Network and Plexidor. I received compensation for my time from Plexidor for sharing my views in this post, but the views expressed here are solely mine. We only share information on products and services we feel our readers will enjoy learning about.

You can learn more about security, energy efficiency and how to choose the right dog door for your size dog by visiting the Plexidor website for lots of great info and more photos!
