There’s exciting news about a great new initiative to help animals and shelters across the country. It’s the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge! This annual initiative is a groundbreaking contest that challenges animal shelters across the country to come up with innovative ways to engage their communities and get more homeless cats and dogs into loving homes.

aspca rachael ray challenge

A total of $600,000 in prize grants are up for grabs to help shelters save more homeless cats and dogs. The 49 contestants will work to save more animals – during the months of June, July and August 2013 – than they did over the same three-month period in 2012. Last year’s competing shelters saved more than 56,000 cats and dogs during the contest, an increase of 14,376 over the same period in 2011!

The ASPCA and Rachael Ray will award a $100,000 grand prize to the shelter contestant that achieves the greatest increase in lives saved during this three-month period. The contestant that does the best job of engaging its community members in helping to save more animals will win $25,000. Those organizations that do the best in their divisions will be eligible for between $10,000 and $25,000 in additional grants. In total, $600,000 in grant funding will be awarded for increases in animal lives saved, as well as a photo contest and general participation.

Vote for Your Favorite State Farm Neighborhood Assist Programs

I’m so happy to have been asked to help spread the word about a fantastic initiative, the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Program. Each year, State Farm generously donates to nonprofits across the United States and Canada. State Farm Neighborhood Assist lets you help decide where the money should go.

neighborhood assist

How It works:

First, Facebook users submit causes that they think deserve a $25,000 grant. Next, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board narrows down the submissions to the top 200 and pairs them with nonprofit organizations that can help make them happen. Finally, Facebook users vote to select the top 40. Each winning cause will receive a $25,000 grant, for a total of $1 million!

I grew up in Detroit and have experienced first hand how much of a need there is for community assistance programs like this one and how they can make a difference in the lives of neighborhoods, kids and families. Now, being a pet blogger and mom to rescue pup Daisy, I’ve also come to be more aware of all the causes supporting animal rights and protection. No matter what type of cause is most important to you, I think it’s so cool that State Farm has started this program and that they are asking all of us to get involved and help choose the grant winners who will receive these much needed funds!

How You Can Help:

Find and vote for your favorite State Farm Neighborhood Assist programs and encourage your friends to do the same. You can vote 10 times per day for any combination of worthy causes and you’ll find categories including Animals, Youth Job Training, Literacy, Community Beautification and lots more.

Here’s a PAW-tastic example of one of the winners from last year’s program. Paws Place Dog Rescue received a $25,000 grant from State Farm and used it to help purchase a much needed new van to transport their shelter dogs that needed to find new homes! Check out the video:

Visit the State Farm Neighborhood Assist website to learn more about the program. You’ve got til April 22nd to help support causes near you and/or that are near and dear to your heart. I’m headed over to vote for my personal favorites today and hope you’ll take a moment to do the same!

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of State Farm and I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.
