Keep Pets Cool and Save Money with a Smart Air Conditioner

Having a fully connected smart home is near the top of my list for #lifegoals and last week, during Prime Day, we got one step closer by snagging an amazing deal on our second Amazon Echo device. “Alexa, manage my life!”

Now that we’ve got Voice and WiFi Control of our music, calendars, weather reports, shopping lists, audiobooks plus a darn-fine kitchen assistant, it’s time to start researching and learning about other smart home devices to save us money and make our lives easier.

Here in South Florida, we pretty much run our air conditioner year-round. It’s probably one of our biggest expenses, so I’m super excited about the new line of Smart Room Air Conditioners from the Kenmore brand. They’re fully programmable, can they be managed remotely using a smartphone app, AND they are Amazon Alexa compatible!

With Kenmore smart technology you can monitor and control the temperature inside your home from the palm of your hand, making it a breeze to keep your family and pets cool this summer while saving money and energy. Peek in on real-time temperature data, adjust your home’s temp from the office or while out running errands. The easy-to-use app provides remote access to turn units on and off and even set schedules for up to seven days, so you can run the AC only when you need it….convenient AND smart!

Watch this quick video to see a very CUTE dog and learn about how it works:

Highlights include:

  • Control on-the-Go: The ability to remotely turn the unit on and off, set a schedule or adjust the temperature provides flexibility to control home climates from anywhere. Use the 24 hour timer to set a schedule to run the units only when needed, or turn the air conditioner on before arriving home to ensure a comfortable temperature upon arrival.
  • Energy Savings: The Kenmore Elite Smart Room Air Conditioners are ENERGY STAR® certified and feature smart technology that allows for easy access and scheduling to run the unit only when needed, helping to save energy and money on utility bills.

If your dog needs an extra challenge or if their dog toys never seem to last, then you’ll want to know about a BarkBox service that’s designed especially for them. It’s BarkBox Super Chewer, the monthly subscription box for dogs with the longest lasting chews and the most durable dog toys around. It’s NOT just for big dogs either…each membership is customized for your dog’s size and allergies, too.

Just as with the standard BarkBox subscription, the Super Chewer BarkBox has a different theme each month, with a creative selection of dog toys, treats and surprises. This month’s theme is straight out of Chewrassic Bark, and packed full with 2 heavy-duty dog toys plus 4 different dog treats. A GREAT deal considering box prices start at $29/month with FREE US shipping!

Here’s what was in the June Super Chewer BarkBox, along with retail value of each item if purchased separately:

BarkBox Super Chewer Dog Toys

  • PetProjekt DogEgg ($14 retail value) This fun toy is made of non-toxic rubber and is designed for heavy chewers. It wobbles. It bounces. It makes noise. It delights dogs of all kinds with its strong build and loud squeak.
  • Nylon T-Rex Bone ($14 retail value) It’s 7″ long and super heavy. It’s also got a smoky bacon scent and flavor!
BarkBox Super Chewer Dog Treats and Chews

  • Dinosaur Meat, Basically ($8 retail value) Sweet potato and chicken dog treats. Made in the USA and wheat/gluten-free.
  • Lava Biscuits ($6 retail value) Hearty oats, scrumptious pork, with sweet apples and honey. A little bit of charcoal to make them black like real lava chunks!

  • Plato Pet Treats Thinkers Duck Stick Dog Treat ($3 retail value) Named Thinkers because they’re made with real duck meat and  gingko biloba, to help boost brain power. Packed full of DHA and Omega-3 fatty acid known for its cognitive benefits, this stick is true brain food…and super tasty, too!
  • Pork Roll Chew for Dogs ($4 retail value) 6″ of 100% pork made in the USA by Sawmill Creek Smokehouse. It’s a super satisfying and long-lasting dog chew.

Super Chewer BarkBox Cost and Value

As I mentioned earlier, the BarkBox Super Chewer subscription prices start at $29/month. A great value considering that the total retail value of items in this box is $49. It will vary from month to month but we’ve always been pleased. In addition to the quality and originality of the BarkBox toys and treats, we love the surprise of a new theme each month.

BarkBox is the most popular monthly subscription box service for dogs, and Daisy’s been getting her BarkBox deliveries for several years now. Each month we show you what toys and treats are inside that month’s BarkBox, and how the total value of the individual items compares to the price of a monthly subscription.

Be aware that each BarkBox subscription is customized for your dog’s size and allergies, so individual items will vary.

The June BarkBox is all about Chewrassic Bark and that means dinosaurs, prehistoric creatures and cleverly-themed treats!

The Chewrassic Bark June BarkBox included 2 super CUTE dog toys and 3 full size dog treats. As always, there was also a card with extra info and entertainment, and it all came wrapped in custom paper designed to match the BarkBox theme of the month. These little extra details add to the fun and excitement of unboxing our BarkBox each month.

June BarkBox Dog Toys

The June BarkBox dog toys were a couple of cuties but also a lot tougher than they look!

  • Gordon the Giant Sloth ($14 retail value) In real life, I’m totally creeped out by sloths but this guy stole my heart. He’s fluffy and squeaky with big claws and a whole lot of personality!
  • Herbert the Herbivore ($14 retail value) He’s a rope tug toy, a chew toy and a squeaker toy all in one! His core is a spiky ball which is like getting a bonus toy we can keep even after Daisy has ripped Herbert open.

June BarkBox Dog Treats

This month’s BarkBox included two of our favorite treat brands plus a Bark & Co exclusive.

  • Healthy Dogma Pterodactyl Treats ($6 retail value) These duck treats are made in the USA with all-natural ingredients and are great for dogs with allergies.
  • Plato Pet Treats Thinkers Duck Stick ($3 retail value) Named Thinkers because they’re made with real duck meat and  gingko biloba, to help boost brain power. Packed full of DHA and Omega-3 fatty acid known for its cognitive benefits, this stick is true brain food…and super tasty, too!
  • Bark & Co Lava Biscuits ($6 retail value) Hearty oats, scrumptious pork, with sweet apples and honey. A little bit of charcoal to make them black like real lava chunks!
BarkBox Cost and Value

By our calculation, this month’s BarkBox had $43 worth of dog toys and treats if you were to purchase them all separately. A great value when you consider that subscription prices start at $21/month with free US shipping. In addition to saving money, we also love the WOW-factor and excitement of getting a new delivery of surprises each month. It’s a chance to discover new dog treats and toys that we might not have known about otherwise.

May BarkBox Review + Coupon: Wild Wild Woof

BarkBox is the number 1 monthly subscription box service for dogs, and Daisy’s been getting the Large Dog BarkBox for several years now. Each month we show you what toys and treats are inside that month’s BarkBox, and how the total value of the individual items compares to the price of a monthly subscription. Be aware that each BarkBox subscription is customized for your dog’s size and allergies, so individual items will vary.

Want to see what was in the May BarkBox subscription box for dogs?
Saddle up, pups, because this month’s BarkBox theme was all about the Wild West!

The Cowboy BarkBox came with 2 large squeaky dog toys and 3 full-size treats. Daisy got plush squeaky toys in this box but if your dog is a bit tough on toys, you can specify “heavy chewer” in your subscription profile and your dog will receive tougher toys. This is NOT to be confused with the Super Chewer BarkBox which is a different subscription for dogs. We’ll be reviewing that box separately.

May BarkBox Dog Toys

Rattle Snake Battle Snake ($12 retail value) This guy uncoils for extra long fun. He’s got squeakers AND a rattling tail. He’s cuter than the average snake and much friendlier!

Biff the Spiffy Buffalo ($14 retail value) This toy is made especially for the BarkBox company and is designed for medium to large dogs. It’s squeaky and fun for tossing, tugging and cuddling. Daisy thinks buffalo sounds DELICIOUS and is licking her chops at the idea of having a whole one all to herself!

May BarkBox Dog Treats

Pork and Beans Dog Treats ($6 retail value) These all-natural dog treats are made in the USA by Lucky Dog with NO wheat, soy or corn. And contrary to the name, they do NOT contain beans. The ingredients are: pork, barley, oat, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, and natural smoke flavor. They are a soft and chewy treat.

My Doggy Cheesy Cookies Dog Treats ($10 retail value) These all-natural dog treats are also made in the USA. They’ve got cheddar and parmesan cheese along with molasses, ginger and rye. The cookies are soft-baked and chewy…just like a cookie should be!

Pork Roll Dog Chew ($4 retail value) This 8″ dog treat is 100% all-natural pork and is sourced and made in the USA by Sawmill Creek Smokehouse. We’re saving this one for a special occasion…from experience, we know that these dog chews are long-lasting and super satisfying!

In addition to multiple treats and toys, BarkBox usually includes a fun extra to go along with each monthly theme. Last month was 90’s themed stickers that we thought were totally rad!

This month, the box included a card with a cutout so that you can create a “wanted poster” of your dog. I couldn’t decide what crime Daisy is wanted for but I’m pretty sure it has to do with being TOO cute! She’s also guilty of begging but what dog isn’t?!? She even looks a little guilty in the photo.

BarkBox Cost and Value

By our calculation, this month’s BarkBox had $46 worth of toys and treats if you were to purchase them all separately. A great value when you consider that subscription prices start at $21/month.

Instant Pot Review + Tips, Hacks and Giveaway

Some posts may contain affiliate links. Read the full disclosure.

The Instant Pot is one of my favorite things! I’ve had mine for 2 years now, and still rave about it to everyone I know. I gave my parents one for Christmas and now they are hooked, too!

If you want to cut straight to the chase, you can check out some of my favorite Instant Pot recipes, hacks and cooking tips I’ve pinned to my Pinterest Board: I Love My Instant Pot.

What’s an Instant Pot

If you haven’t already heard about the Instant Pot, it’s a programmable electric pressure cooker that takes the place of 7 kitchen appliances/cooking functions. It’s a Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker and Warmer. Not only is it super versatile, but it also let’s you prepare healthy, tasty dishes up to 70% faster. It’s great for parties and entertaining since it keeps food warm for hours.

Instant Pot Bone Broth and Stew for Pets and People

In addition to cooking for your human family members, you can also use the Instant Pot to cook for your dog! Making bone broth is super easy in the Instant Pot and I usually make several batches each month and always make a batch with NO onions or garlic so that it’s safe for Daisy. I also make dog-friendly stew to store in the freezer in small portions for Daisy. Her favorite is a fish and sweet potato stew but I like to experiment.

How to Store Broth, Stew and Batch Cooking

I find the easiest way to freeze and store bone broth, stew and soup in small portions is using these Square Silicone Molds. Each tray holds 8 4oz cubes so portions are pre-measured when I want to pop a few out of the freezer to use them. I learned this tip from Michelle Tam at Nom Nom Paleo. She’s got amazing Instant Pot Recipes and Tips on her blog!

Easy to Peel Hard-Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot

Another of my favorite IP tricks is making hard-boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. Although it’s not really much faster than other methods, the pressure makes them way easier to peel than any other way I’ve tried. I use this method as my guide but usually put them in a bowl of ice and water to chill them quickly as soon as they are done cooking.

Getting Started with Instant Pot

There are SO many things I make in my Instant Pot: steamed beets, carnitas, “baked” sweet potatoes, short ribs, corned beef & cabbage, shredded chicken…you can even make cheesecake although I haven’t tried that one yet!

If you don’t know where to get started, LifeHacker has done a list of The First 7 Things You Should Make With a New Instant Pot.

You can also join the Official Instant Pot Community Group on Facebook. You’ll connect with all kinds of IP Fanatics and real people sharing Instant Pot recipes, ideas tips and solutions.

In addition to what’s on my Pinterest board, these are some of my favorite Instant Pot recipes and resources:

Got a dad or hubby who loves to cook? The Instant Pot makes a GREAT Father’s Day gift idea!

Where to Buy an Instant Pot

If you’re wondering where to buy an Instant Pot, I recommend Amazon.com. I got mine on sale HERE and as new models come out, the previous version usually becomes a great bargain. You’ll also spot Gold Box deals on Instant Pot from time to time as well as Black Friday and Cyber Week deals.
