We heard some super exciting news from our pals at ASPCA and wanted to share it with all of you!

Just last week, the winning shelter was announced in the ASPCA Rachael Ray 100K Challenge. This is the annual challenge in which animal shelters around the country compete to see who can save the most lives. The grand prize winning shelter receives $100K to help them continue their important work. You can go here to view all the winners and prizes.

This marks the fifth and final year of the competition. Since 2010, hundreds of contestants have dedicated themselves to this three month contest to increase their adoption numbers over the same period the previous year.

This year, the competing shelters saved more than 68,000 lives in just three months. In five years total, challengers saved more than a 282,000+ lives! Pet adoption is an important cause and is especially near and dear to my heart, because our Daisy is a rescue dog we adopted from a local shelter.

Tips for Safe Camping with Pets

camping with pets

There are a couple of weeks left til Labor Day, so be sure to make the most of the rest of summer vacation with some outdoor fun with your pets! Even if you don’t have time for a big trip, you can still find a campground nearby and enjoy a quick camping trip with the family and fur kids.

ASPCA has some really helpful safety tips for camping with pets:

1. Bring a pet first aid kit. It is always better to be prepared and often remote campsites will not have quick access to veterinary care.

2. Be sure to locate the closest animal emergency clinic and add its contact information to your phone.

3. Pet proof! Before you let your pet out on your campsite, thoroughly inspect the area to make sure other campers haven’t left anything behind.

4. Don’t let your pet roam. Because your pet is not familiar with the area, he could get lost, fall into a river, or become stuck. Other well-meaning campers may feed him something toxic or may have rat poison out in their campsite. He also may have a run in with some not-so-well meaning wildlife. (Your pet first aid kit will have everything you’ll need to make a de-skunking bath that really works).

5. Make sure that your pet has proper ID on her collar at all times and a reflective collar if she will be out on the campsite at night.

We’ve got a very special giveaway for a GREAT cause and we hope you will all join in AND share this post with your friends, family and followers! This is an opportunity to WIN a cool ASPCA #FightCruelty Prize Pack, but even more importantly, it’s a chance to learn about lots of ways to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of animals.

ASPCA Top Ways to Help Animals

The ASPCA has put together a super helpful list of Top Ways To Help Animals In Your Community:

  • Learn how to report animal cruelty. One of the best things you can do to help animals in your community is to keep a list of people, including a humane law enforcement officer, a teacher or your veterinarian, who can help you report animal cruelty. Every state is different. In some areas, the police department investigates animal cruelty; in others, that job falls to local animal control or another municipal agency. If you aren’t sure where to report cruelty, visit ASPCA’s Report Animal Cruelty section.
  • Start a neighborhood watch program. Get to know the animals in your neighborhood and invite your friends and neighbors to do the same. Together you can keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviors—abuse and neglect of companion animals, the mistreatment of local wildlife, dogs left in hot cars and other signs of abuse.
  • Volunteer at your local shelter or animal rescue organization. Volunteering at your local shelter is a great way to make a difference in the lives of many animals. From walking dogs and organizing fundraising events to fostering abused or frightened animals, shelters across the country are in desperate need of volunteers. Be sure to visit Ten Ways to Help Your Local Shelter for more suggestions.
  • Become an animal activist. Visit the lobby section at ASPCA to find out everything you can do to raise awareness for animal rights.
  • Read the full list to discover even more ways you can get involved and help!
