Daisy and I have been taste-testing a yummy new site called Sweet Relish. It’s a shopping site, but it’s also so much more. It’s the Secret Sauce of shopping! In addition to telling you all about it, we’ve also got a special opportunity to help our favorite local rescue group earn donations from Sweet Relish, so please be sure to keep reading…

Discover, Share and Shop with Sweet Relish

Sweet Relish helps you to create lists, browse, and buy products you love. What makes it so special is that, similar to the way Pinterest works, you can share your lists with friends, and view lists created by other people, which is a sure way to discover sweet new stuff you didn’t even know about!  Whenever you find an item online that you might want to buy in the future, you just click the relish button in your browser and add the item to one of your shopping lists. You can also use it to make a wish list if you want to drop some hints to a special someone about what to get you for your birthday or other special occasion.

And speaking of a special someone, meet Luther! Isn’t he gorgeous??? He’s a rescue dog, saved from death row and being cared for by Have a Heart rescue group in South Florida. Luther is a Lab/Hound mix…just like what we guess Daisy to be (she’s a rescue dog, too), and we really hope someone will adopt him soon and make him a part of their forever family. He’s about three and we hear he’s great with kids!

Take Home List for Adopted Shelter Dogs

I’m using Sweet Relish to create the perfect “Take Home List” for Luther, so when he gets adopted, his new family will know about some very special items to help him feel comfortable as he adjusts to his new life and home. It actually makes a great guide for anyone adopting a rescue dog…getting so close to death row, and spending so much time in shelters and foster homes, these dogs deserve some special care! I based my list on our own experiences adopting Daisy and included some items we found helpful in her adjustment, as well as some new items worth trying.

TOMS at Zulily

One of my favorite brands is having a special sale right now over at Zulily and I wanted you to know about it, too! If you aren’t already aware, TOMS is a special company that donates a new pair of shoes or eyeglasses to a child in need for every pair they sell.

TOMS kids shoes

TOMS and Zulily have put together a great selection and discounted all the prices so it’s a win-win! You get a super deal on cool shoes for you and/or your kiddos and a child in need somewhere in the world gets a new pair too! That goes for their designer sunglasses…except when you buy a pair of those, TOMS provides prescription glasses, medical treatment or sight-saving surgery.

TOMS eyewear

Zulily is a members-only shopping site, but it’s FREE to join here. In addition to cool stuff like TOMS, they also run frequent pet sales on unique and boutique items you won’t find at the chain stores, and nice home decor and accessories too!

Today is Giving Tuesday: Give Back To a Cause You Care About #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday
We all know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard about Giving Tuesday? This year, a new tradition will hopefully take hold. One that involves giving to causes that help others and spreading the word to help encourage others as well. Giving Tuesday is a simple idea. All you need to do is find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to join in acts of giving. Then tell everyone you can about what you are doing and why it matters.

What cause you choose to support is up to you. Whether you choose to donate money, time or goods and services, every little bit helps! There are so many great organizations that help veterans, natural disaster victims, animals and other important causes, but do take time to research and make sure that you know where your money is going and how it will be used. One resource I like is Charity Navigator. Over the past 10 years, Charity Navigator’s free charity ratings have enabled millions of donors to access unbiased information before making a donation. You can search for a charity by name, or by topic if you’d like to discover a new cause or see what causes others are supporting. They’ve got an entire category devoted to Animal Welfare and Rights, too!

So, although we are in peak shopping season, I just wanted to take a sec and make sure you knew about this special new day! Be sure to help spread the word using the hashtag #GivingTuesday and follow @GivingTues on Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

ASPCA Sandy Response Continues: How You Can Help + Be Prepared!

ASPCA Sandy Response

It’s been 2 weeks already since Hurricane Sandy devastated so many and I just wanted to give you a brief update and reminder of the important work the ASPCA does in emergency situations like this one. Many people are still in need of assistance. Some are leaving shelters and having to relocate along with their pets. The ASPCA is working to help keep families with pets together and provide transport and support. They’re also helping reunite lost pets with their families after the storm.

As winter sets in, the ASPCA is responding to displaced families in need of supplies and critical veterinary care, too. They’ve distributed thousands of pounds of pet food and cat litter to areas of extreme need and are speeding up the grant approval process so that they can assist shelters and other animal welfare groups affected by Sandy more quickly. For updates on the ASPCA’s response to Sandy and its repercussions, please keep an eye on the ASPCA blog and follow the ASPCA on Twitter.

You can also help support their vital work with a donation if you are able. If you would like to contribute to their disaster relief fund, you can make a gift here. Every cent will go to ASPCA disaster relief efforts.

Also take this time to make sure you AND your pet are prepared in case a disaster or emergency should happen. The ASPCA has a comprehensive and invaluable Disaster Preparedness Checklist for Families with Pets and you can request a Free Emergency Pet Alert Sticker so responders know to look for pets at your home.

You can also get prepared and help support ASPCA at the same time by purchasing one of their Emergency Ready Pet Survival Kits to keep in your home or give as a gift.

They come packed with essential items you and your dog or cat will need in the event of an emergency or disaster AND 40% Off all sales go directly to the ASPCA to help fund their work. Find it at the ASPCA online store.
