ASPCA Website and Resources for Kids

Recently, I’ve been tweeting and sharing news on Facebook to help spread the word about the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge where for the third year in a row, shelters around the country are in a race to save more animals’ lives by competing for grant prizes. That’s all very important, and I hope you’ll help spread the word, too, but it’s also a fairly grown-up concept. I thought it would be fun to share some ways to get the kiddos involved, too.  It’s never too early to start teaching children about being kind to pets and helping animals in need and ASPCA has a special website just for kids, called ASPCA Kids!

Pledge to Help Homeless Pets

A while back Daisy and I told you about Pets Add Life (PAL), a public service initiative to help spread the word about the benefits and joys of pet adoption. Well, even if you aren’t quite ready to adopt this week or month, or already have a full-house of fur kids, there are other ways you CAN make a difference and help homeless pets in need:

Hop on over to Facebook (it will only take a sec, I promise) and Take the Pets Add Life Pet Pledge. Promise to share a photo of a homeless pet with your social network on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter. So easy! You probably share cute animal photos anyway…don’t we all?!? Or, if you have a bit more time, pledge to volunteer at a shelter. Just these simple steps can make a big difference in the lives of animals in need of a forever family!

And speaking of sharing, have you checked out the Pets Add Life (PAL) videos on YouTube? Each one is a cute and funny “interview” with a talking animal, designed to help share the message and raise awareness for pet adoption. If your pet is an only child, they will definitely get you thinking about how much they would probably LOVE a new brother or sister! Be sure to have a watch and share them with your PALS…everyone loves a funny talking animal video!

This post is sponsored by the Pets Add Life campaign and the American Pet Products Association. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about the benefits and joys of pet ownership.

Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue

July 23rd has been designated as a special day for bloggers to unite in support of dog rescue! Whether you are a blogger or a reader, there are so many ways each of us can help this important cause…even something as simple as pledging not to shop at any store that sells puppies. Sadly, many people still don’t know that most Pet Store Puppies come from large-scale commercial breeding operations commonly known as Puppy Mills.  Millions of dogs are euthanized each year because not enough people are adopting dogs through local rescue groups and shelters. Instead, many people purchase from pet stores not knowing that most come from puppy mills.

Operators of puppy mills breed dogs in unsanitary, overcrowded and often cruel conditions where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. ASPCA is raising awareness and helping to put a stop to this with their “No Pet Store Puppies” Campaign. In addition to the No Pet Store Puppies Facebook Page, ASPCA has also rolled out a series of YouTube Videos to inform the public and YOU can help spread the word, too!

Take the Pledge: Support ASPCA No Pet Store Puppies Campaign!

Take the Pledge and help fight puppy mill cruelty by refusing to shop at pet stores and on websites that sell puppies.

I pledge that if a pet store sells puppies, I won’t buy anything there. Not pet food, kitty litter, or squeaky toys — Nothing! And I pledge to tell everyone I know not to shop there either!

Wondering where to get a dog or puppy?

If you’re looking to make a puppy part of your family, make adoption your first option and find a dog at your local shelter. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. Shelters across the country have dogs and puppies for adoption that need loving homes.

If you’re committed to a specific breed of dog and can’t find what you’re looking for at your local shelter, contact a rescue group for that breed. You’ll be surprised at the number of breed-specific rescue groups out there!
