There are lots of ways to help shelter animals in need: you could adopt if you are able, foster a pet while helping to find them a forever family, volunteer and/or donate money if you are financially able.

Did you know there is also something you can do that is completely free, takes about 30 seconds and helps out, too???

Today is Giving Tuesday: Give Back To a Cause You Care About #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday
We all know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard about Giving Tuesday? This year, a new tradition will hopefully take hold. One that involves giving to causes that help others and spreading the word to help encourage others as well. Giving Tuesday is a simple idea. All you need to do is find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to join in acts of giving. Then tell everyone you can about what you are doing and why it matters.

What cause you choose to support is up to you. Whether you choose to donate money, time or goods and services, every little bit helps! There are so many great organizations that help veterans, natural disaster victims, animals and other important causes, but do take time to research and make sure that you know where your money is going and how it will be used. One resource I like is Charity Navigator. Over the past 10 years, Charity Navigator’s free charity ratings have enabled millions of donors to access unbiased information before making a donation. You can search for a charity by name, or by topic if you’d like to discover a new cause or see what causes others are supporting. They’ve got an entire category devoted to Animal Welfare and Rights, too!

So, although we are in peak shopping season, I just wanted to take a sec and make sure you knew about this special new day! Be sure to help spread the word using the hashtag #GivingTuesday and follow @GivingTues on Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

The Incredible Dr. Pol National Geographic Wild

In honor of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (November 5th-11th), star of National Geographic Wild’s #1 series,  Dr. Jan Pol from The Incredible Dr. Pol took time from his busy schedule to offer our readers his expertise on spaying and neutering, as well as answer some burning questions we had about him, his family and the show. We’re HUGE fans of the show and so excited to get the opportunity to interview him as well as help spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering all pets to help reduce the number of unwanted animals who end up in shelters through no fault of their own.

10 Questions with The Incredible Dr. Pol

1) We know that you’re helping to spread the word about reducing the homeless pet population as part of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.  What age should pets be spayed or neutered?  Is it ever too early?
We spay and neuter pets at 4 months.  This is the ideal age for us.  I know some places do it earlier, but I like to do it at 16 weeks.

2) Are there other benefits to spaying and neutering pets besides reducing the homeless animal population/overcrowding in shelters?
Yes.  It reduces the incidence of mammary tumors, uterus infections and in males the prostrate problems later in life. [Read more…]

  • The Red Cross offers info, updates and contact info for people needing aid, on their website RedCross.org. You can also dial “**REDCROSS” (**73327677) from your mobile phone and they will send you a link to download their app or you can download them directly from the iTunes or Google Play app stores. The app is free and has useful tools including a shelter finder, storm tracker, find help and let others know you are safe even if the power is out!
  • The ASPCA is posting updates and information related to Hurricane Sandy and pets here.
  • Google has put together this extensive Hurricane Crisis Map with list of resources and shelter.
  • For everyone on Twitter, follow the hashtag #SandyPets for the latest updates and info on pet-related news during Hurricane Sandy.
  • On their page dedicated to Natural Disasters and Pets, the Humane Society of America is displaying a live Twitter Feed with information and updates from all Sandy related tweets, including where to find shelter and pet-friendly tips. This is very helpful if you don’t have a twitter account. I’ve also included the feed below:

flea flicker tick kicker

Ark Naturals is having a special event during today’s big game to help benefit animal shelters and rescue organizations in New England and New York (the opposing teams facing off today)!

The maker of natural health and wellness pet products, Ark Naturals will donate one case of its popular botanical Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! to a select number of animal shelters in New England and New York for every extra point and field goal kicked in Sunday’s big game. And, if either team runs a rare flea flicker play in the game, Ark Naturals will donate five cases to animal shelters in the team’s home town.

Ark Naturals will select the lucky shelters and is hoping that the scores for both teams are high — with many kicking points so it could give away at least 10 – 15 cases in total. Animal shelters in Mass., N.H., R.I., and Conn. for New England, and in New York and New Jersey that want to be considered for the free product, are asked to post a request on Ark Naturals’ Facebook page.

In addition, at kickoff which is around 6:30 p.m. ET, the first 25 pet parents who tweet Ark Naturals @ArkNaturals or post on its Facebook page that they are watching the game with their pet will receive a free bottle of Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! A limit of 50 bottles will be given away.

Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! is an all natural spray that repels & kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes on contact. It has a mild and fresh fragrance with no oily residue. For more information visit Ark Naturals here.
