Just spotted this pet deal over at Amazon.com for 42% Off the Kyjen Dog Agility Starter Kit. Regular price is $69.99 but it’s on sale for $40 with Free Shipping. A few Amazon sellers have it for slightly less, but charge for shipping and I prefer to order deals that ship directly from Amazon.com when possible!

The agility starter kit is for outdoor use and includes a 32-inch-wide high jump that adjusts to 34 inches high, an open tunnel that measures 24 by 24 by 48 inches, a 34-inch square pause box, and six weave poles that measure 36 inches high and are spaced 20 inches apart. Setup and usage instructions, game rules, a stopwatch, award ribbons, and a start and finish line, as well as a dog-agility training-tips booklet are also included.

From reading the reviews, this sounds like a very fun kit for small and medium dogs, or for anyone just looking for a fun outdoor play set, but it’s obviously not professional agility equipment at this low price. We’ve always been happy with the quality and design of Kyjen Products! Visit Amazon.com for reviews and to order.

Stop Barking + More w/ ShakeTrainer $23 Shipped ($39 reg)!

shaketrainer on sale

You might have heard advice from dog trainers about putting pennies in a can and shaking it when your dog barks, chews, jumps  or does other stuff you want to stop. The shakeTrainer is a professionally designed system that works on the same principle but is easier to hold and comes with a training DVD.

The idea is that you correct the dog using the noise the shakeTrainer makes, NOT your hands or voice. Touching or speaking to your dog is attention, and the best way to encourage a behavior is by giving your dog attention.

Coupaw.com has the award winning shakeTrainer On Sale for $22.99 including Free Shipping right now! That’s 41% OFF the regular price of $39. The pet deals at Coupaw rotate frequently and they keep a full updated list to the right-side of the main deal of the day, so check the list there if you don’t see this one immediately on the homepage. I also recommend you signup for their free email alerts to get notification as new pet deals are added!

Will Work for Green Beans: ‘High-Value’ Treats Don’t Have to be High-Priced

Daisy crazy for green beans

We love cookies and treats around here, and although we indulge from time to time,  most are too high in calories and a bit too pricey to be used in large quantity as every day training treats.

Since we use positive reinforcement for training Daisy, it’s important to have something on hand that she really loves and will work for (professional trainers call this a “high-value treat”) but that is also healthy, low in calories and won’t break the bank.

For some dogs this is cheerios, for others it’s small bits of cheese, but for Daisy it’s green beans. At some point I started to notice that we could get Daisy to do just about anything for a bite of green bean. In fact, she “sits” without being told, at the mere site of them! We are big believers in the “Nothing in Life is Free” concept when it comes to pets, training and treats so she learned quickly that in order to get a treat, she needs to DO something good or interesting.

Daisy green beans

The only downside is that cooked beans are a bit too messy to keep in my pocket when we are out and about, so we stick to tiny bits of freeze-fried beef liver treats that can be purchased in bulk and broken or cut into smaller pieces, when on the go to reward good behavior…but at home, I always keep an extra container full of steamed, plain green beans in the fridge just for Daisy! I’ve also tricked her into believing that getting her teeth brushed is a reward but more about that later! Just wanted to share this quick money saving tip while I was thinking about it!

Other low-cost treats that Daisy loves include frozen banana slices, boiled bits of sweet potato, watermelon cubes and this dog treat recipe I made up for Frozen Brown Rice Crunchies! Leave a comment and let us know what food or treat your dog will work hardest to get!

K9 Kamp Week 1 Highlights – We’re Walking on Sunshine and Running from Rainstorms!

Daisy smile
As we mentioned last week, we’ve joined in on the fun with Koly & Kelly and the gang for the K9 Kamp 4-week Fitness Challenge! The challenge for week #1 was Walking on Sunshine but since we are heading into our rainy season down here, maybe we should call it Running from Rainstorms! The assignment was to try new ways to “brighten up” your walking…and we didn’t let the weather dampen our spirits!

Daisy and I already have a pretty consistent walking routine but it’s gotten somewhat predictable so we decided to spice things up a bit by adding some variety each day this week. A couple of the days that involved unplanned sprints since we got caught in HUGE downpours – we’ll call that “interval training”. Here’s a few of the other ways we changed things up a bit this week:

balance beam walking on curb
Balance Beam Walking: Daisy already loves walking on the curb and has pretty great balance, so I decided to hop on up there behind her and see how long we could keep walking at a steady pace before one of us fell off. This turned out to be more challenging than I expected because she kept stopping and turning around to wait for me! It’s also really difficult to get a photo while balance-walking AND holding a leash but it was good for a laugh and we’ll keep practicing since it was so much fun!

Nature Walk

Nature Walk: We took in a change of scenery and got off the beaten path with a nature walk this week. Daisy found lots of new smells to sniff so it was slow going at first but we enjoyed it! That is, until we got home and I counted all of my mosquito bites!

Daisy stairs

Stair Climbing: To be honest, we live on the top floor in our building so we already climb stairs several times a day. Since we were looking for ways to boost our activity level this week, we took advantage of the stairs during the rainy days and made a few extra trips up and down. I highly recommend practicing stair climbing with your pup if he or she isn’t used to it. I’ve brought other dogs over to our place while dog walking or pet sitting and had more than one pup freak out or actually take a tumble because they weren’t sure what to do! I’ve also nearly fallen down the stairs myself when their leash got wrapped around my ankles, so practice with treats a few steps at a time and soon they will love stair climbing as much as Daisy does!

Daisy lickety stik low-cal treat

Low Calorie Training Treats: We all know that we work extra hard and try to do our very best when there is an incentive and dogs are no exception! This week I let Daisy try out a new Lickable Dog Treat from PetSafe called Lickety Stik during our fitness challenge. It’s the perfect treat for K9 Kampers because it’s all-natural, and there is only 1 calorie in every 10 licks! Plus, I like that this handy treat is made in the USA and comes in a no mess rollerball dispenser so it’s great for taking on the go without stuffing messy treats into your pockets.  If you are interested in getting your own Lickety Stik, (short commercial break) they come in all-natural Chicken, Liver or Bacon flavors and you can find Lickety Stik Lickable Dog Treats at Amazon! They cost under $7 each or around $18 for a 3 pack and are eligible for Free Shipping! So far, I’m guessing one container will last us about 2-4 weeks.

So, those are a few of the highlights from our first week! How did you do with Week #1 of K9 Kamp Fitness Challenge? Leave us a comment to let us know you stopped by!
